Colter James Holzapfel

Forever in our hearts

Our son Colter was loved beyond measure. His life — though brief — gave us a mission: to make sure other families have access to the information and care they deserve.

In His
Memory

Born from love and loss.

"We created Colter's Watch so that no family has to face what we faced — and so that no mother goes without the information she needs to protect her baby."

Colter's Watch was founded by Derek and Chasity Holzapfel of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, in memory of their son Colter. After experiencing the devastating loss of their baby late in pregnancy, they channeled their grief into action.

A Level 2 ultrasound — also called a targeted anatomy scan — with color Doppler imaging can detect umbilical cord abnormalities that a standard scan can miss. For many high-risk mothers, this scan is the difference between informed care and uncertainty.

Too many mothers — especially those in rural areas, without insurance, or with limited access to specialty care — never receive this scan. Colter's Watch is changing that, one grant at a time.

📋

Underinsured or denied coverage

Insurance that won't cover the scan due to high deductibles, denials, or limited specialty benefits.

Mothers in areas without easy access to maternal-fetal medicine specialists or radiology departments.

High-risk pregnancy

Those with pregnancy risk factors who would benefit from detailed fetal and cord imaging.

Got questions?

We want to make this process as clear and easy as possible. Here are answers to what we hear most.

What exactly is a Level 2 ultrasound?

+

A Level 2 ultrasound — also called a targeted anatomy scan or fetal anatomy survey — is a detailed ultrasound typically performed between 18–22 weeks of pregnancy. Unlike a standard scan, it includes a thorough assessment of fetal anatomy, placental location, amniotic fluid levels, and the umbilical cord. When performed with color Doppler, it can evaluate blood flow through the cord and identify abnormalities in cord insertion or structure that a routine scan may miss.

Does submitting an application guarantee I'll receive a grant?

+

No — submitting an application does not guarantee a grant. All applications are reviewed based on eligibility, financial need, gestational age, and available funding. We do our best to assist as many mothers as possible, and we will always communicate our decision within 5–7 business days.

Do I have to be from Kentucky to apply?

+

No. While our initial partner facilities are in the Winchester and Mount Sterling, Kentucky area, we accept applications from mothers across the United States. If you are outside our local area, we will work with you to identify a nearby participating or willing scan facility.

Will I receive cash or a check?

+

Never. Colter's Watch pays your healthcare provider or scan facility directly. You will not receive any cash, check, or financial transfer. This protects both you and the integrity of the grant program.

I have insurance. Can I still apply?

+

Yes, if your insurance has denied coverage for the scan, your deductible makes it unaffordable, or your Medicaid plan doesn't cover specialty scans in your area, you may still qualify. We consider the full picture of your financial situation, not just whether you technically have coverage.

How do I donate to Colter's Watch?

+

We are building our donation infrastructure now. In the meantime, please follow us on Facebook or email grants@colterswatch.org to be notified when our donation portal launches. Your support will directly fund scans for mothers in need.
